I hate spam. I detest it. I hate it even more when the spammer is a scam artist. I’m not talking about the somewhat easily spotted lottery, ‘you are the sole heir to this foreign business person’s estate,’ Paypal, Ebay, or even the IRS scam. I’m talking about the work at home scammers. There creeps make it harder for legitimate home-based workers to find work or for those seeking work to see anything as legitimate.
Slimy crooks!
Here is your typical application processing, ad processing, or data entry scam job description:
“This is a great, easy job that anyone can do from home. All you have to do is place/process ads and you receive $XX for every application/ad you process.”
Sounds like a commission-based type of thing, right? Then they hit you with the “to complete your application” or “for training materials, send $XX via Paypal to scamartist@scamjob.com and you can get started right away.”
Why am I covering this again? Because some slimeball supposedly named Lori J. Stevenson, assistant HR Supervisor for VSD Virtual Service Data decided to spam me. The email addresses used were worker8@comcast.net (sent from) and jhager@microdyne.com (to). Of course a dozen or so others were spammed, like me, via blind carbon copy. The payment was supposed to be sent to support@ljwah3.com.
After reporting the spam to Comcast & microdyne.com, I went to the website in question. It was sparse, but clean looking and professional looking enough. I checked various links on the site and found that some went to different domains. From there I went to my favorite WHOIS search site and checked them all.
The mastermind scammer slimeball is hiding under the name EFU Limited and is based in Detroit, MI. His/her email address, sender_48221@yahoo.com, is associated with 8 other domains.
ljwah.com, ljwah2.com, ljwah3.com were all created on 6/2/07 and dkjobs.net’s administrative contact uses the email addy careers@ljah.com. ljah.com is an old-school home job scammer.

If any variation of ljah is part of the domain or email address of an ‘employer,’ run away!

I knew immediately the first rule of thumb when looking for WAH jobs, NEVER PAY TO WORK!!

Thanks for sharing, all. The more that we call them out, the less likely they’ll get money from anyone. Report the email to the sender’s ISP as abuse and also put in a Paypal report. I reported them to Paypal and so far have not had a response.
As for the name Lori Stevenson, it might just be the name on the original “training materials” email that these people received and they just copy and paste the whole thing. As for emailing the sender to call them on trying to scam others, they either ignore it or get defensive.

Thank You Sherrie for posting your blog! I too have the Lori Stevenson E mail, from my response to an ad on craigslist! I too was hesitant when I noticed I had to pay first! This was my second response, though I have a similar one, different name and smaller processing fee of 6 dollars. I am very glad to see this because it confirms my suspicion of a fraud. I first looked it up on bbb.com and couldnt find it. First red flag!

Thanks a bunch!!! I received the same email just today. I was excited about the propect and even called my husband to tell him about it. Then I decided I better Google the company just to be sure, am I glad I took that step! Thank you thank you!!! I am a proud SAHM of a one year old precious little boy and am just starting to try to find a legitimate work from home position. Are there any out there??? It is so extemely frustrating to try to find a way to contribute financially to our family while also providing what I believe to be the best care possible for our son. Please, if you have any advice and/or suggestions I would be most grateful.

Glad you found this post, HB. It amazes me that people are still passing this scam around. The lower processing fee is their attempt to get past the target’s reluctance to pay $20-30 bucks. People regularly spend $6 on lunch, so they might be more willing to spend it on the chance the gig might be legit.
As far as bbb.org, there are some legit companies that aren’t listed. searching for the “company name scam” should give decent results.

I am currently working from home, but I was just looking for something else part-time for extra income and I sent an email to an ad on craig’s list. That’s when I received the email from this “Lori Stevenson”.

You’re both very welcome, Sherry and Shavon. Ah, Craigslist is becoming the place for scam leads! I think the people who fall for this type of opportunity use it because it’s free and people are less likely to report them.
It took a while for me to find a legit position and I haven’t looked back since. Check the telecommuting moms thread on wahm.com and the Real Jobs from Home Yahoo Group for legit leads, scam alerts, job search help, and encouragement from others on the search or already working from home.

I guess she’s cutting down to see if she’ll catch more unsuspecting people. I was tipped off by the up front cost & the e-mail address. A real company would pay to have a website.

Thank you so much! I got the same email. The ad was from Janglo.com. My husband was so excited and told me to sign up, but I was suspicious that 1. You PAY to work 2. They never ask for a resume, ocntact you other than email… they basically don’t care who you are before you “Work” for them 3. PAYPAL 4. They are avoiding government tax. So I told my husband to wait while I do research, and I am keeping this open for when he comes home. Thank you. BTW – would you know how to get a non-scam at home job? I live out of the country, I’m a graphic designer, and I would work American hours. I would also do non-graphic related jobs online.

GREAT. THANKS. These scams drive me insane. I usually respond with something or randomly fill out their applications lol… whatever… but i did just receive this email, and for once, I actually had a second look because it ’somewhat’, kinda, sounded interesting and/or legit. I googled it and here we are, of course.
I read this once or twice on the internet and it should be the rule of thumb, work at home or anything else….
A JOB PAYS YOU, YOU DO NOT PAY THEM.
Think of it. Why would you pay someone to work for them, even if it is such a nominal amount. Business is business and they usually claim this is just to weed out all those not interested. HELLO>>> business costs, these scammers aren’t paying for advertising, its usually spam or posted on free classified sites. Never, never, never pay someone with the hope of getting employment with them.
I definitely agree with you, and it sucks big time, that most of the work-at-home internet deals are scams and you can’t tell which ones are legit. Its not fair to those businesses nor anyone looking for such an employment situation.
Sucks. I wish there was some ‘law’ or fines or something they could receive because I feel its illegal, its ripping people off. Most people paying anything are looking for employment and most probably scrunge up whatever they ask for.
OMG these people piss me off.
I so want to start a company putting these guys ‘out of business’, even if thats what you want to call it.

Today I came across an ad on the Manhattan, NY website of Craigslist (under Customer Service jobs) for a telecommuting/WAH job as a Verification Agent.
The advertisement, listed as a Craigslist PostingID: 977676427 in part reads: “You can help Veri-Log fight telemarketing fraud and make money from home using your computer. As a Verification Agent, you would listen to recordings of sales calls to determine if the sale was valid or if there is evidence of sales fraud or undue customer confusion. This is a telecommute position which is paid by the number of recordings reviewed usually about $13.00-$14.00/hr. You work from your home using your computer and Internet access. We supply all needed training and software Apply with us today, just send an email for more information.”
I sent an email requesting the additional information (I did NOT include my resume)
About an hour later I received the following email:

First red flag was the responder’s Title — no one signs there title as “management”. Next I clicked on the http://www.dknobs.net/va.html link and was taken to a brief but clean website on Verification Agents…the next red flag was this website asked for a resume to be sent via RING CENTRAL faxing. Real employers want resumes sent as email attachments or incorporated within the body of the text in an email response — no one asks for Ring Central specific faxing.
As someone who is not familiar with scams and has only recently begun to search for home based work, but as someone who has a critical eye, I began to seek out further information on internet job scams, and whoosh….I ended up here!
I tagged the advertisement and sent the tag to Craigslist to alert them. Hopefully they will follow-up and purge the alleged job advertisement.
I’m so glad you have this blog, and I hope the above-relayed information is useful in preventing others from becoming victims of internet scams.

Its good to see that others are calling out scammers as well. I have a blog post on my blog at http://www.surveyseeker.net/2009/01/27/wwwwebsecretshoppercom-is-a-scam/ that talks about another common scam found that is exploiting people who want to work at home. My blog also lists online survey panels that pay for your opinion and I know they pay because I’m a member of every one of the panels listed there.
But enough of my spam and back to the subject at hand cause I do have something to add.
Generally speaking no legit company will ask you to pay to get employed, however there are a couple exceptions to this rule. Some of the virtual calling centers want to do a background check on the people they hire and will request you pay for it up front. While a tad shady in my opinion the fact is some companies in the real world job market do the very same thing. While we as workers on the internet have to be concerned about safety, companies do as well and this requires background checks which can become an excessive expense after a certain point. I feel as WAH becomes more mainstream many more companies will start requiring background and request a fee for doing them because of the mass of applications a company can get over the internet in a small length of time.
Just my two cents.

Well…I was scammed for the 1st time in my life by these people. (I always prided myself as being smart and not taken in by scammers…guess I was wrong.)I was so excited to see the email because my husband and I are having financial difficulty right now and we are down to one vehicle (the other needs transmission work). I was half-asleep and sent the $15 via PayPal. I tried twice to send a reply afterward and email kept bouncing back w/ “user unknown”. I went to PayPal and started my dispute and requested a refund. I got it, but I also got a nasty response of “This is not a scam. You have some nerve insulting someone you do not know. You are the SCAM”. …What??? Ok, not hardly. I don’t get people to send me $15 for nothing. I started thinking about it and why would they need $15 to send training materials VIA EMAIL??? Anyway, lesson learned. I’ll be more vigilant next time.

I received the same email as Lee. Mine came from a Carrie Curry from what_mail@excite.com and it said To: stephanie_smith@bestautismservices.com. I went to bestautismservices.com and forwarded the emai to them, asking about their connection to VDP or VSD, which ever they are (had both in email). I haven’t heard back yet.

I got an identical automated reply from a craigslist poster who called herself Helen Carter. Email addresses: processingworknow@gmail.com and processingworknow1@gmail.com
